Calculus: Derivatives

Updated: Oct 24, 2022

Calcuus is a subject that can be difficult for a high schooler to learn, and onne part of this hard subject is understanding derivatives. Now, what are derivatives? Derivatives tell you how fast the output (y-value) is changing compared to the input (x-value). The formula for this is hx^n=hnx^n-1. Now lets talk about a example. Lets say I have 3x^2 and want to do the derivative of it. First, we'll multipy 3 and 2 which is 6. Then we will do 2-1 which is 1. So our answer is 6x:

And that is how you do the derivative of a problem like this. What about the derivative of trig functions and ln? Well, below is a list that will hopefully provide you with the answers that you need:

What are some real world senerios of derivatives?

Well, you use derivatives if your calculating the profit and loss in a buisiness using graphs. So even if you work in econimics, you will eventually have to use calculus. You also use it daily, when you drive a car becuase the speed indicator tells you the speed of your car a millisecsond before. It would be impossible to do so without derivatives because when your change in time is 0, your answer is undefined, so derivatives tell you that as you approach 0 what your speed is. Derivatives are also used in many physics equations, so it is important to understand derivatives at a young age.
